Prayers at Council Meetings?

Some reassurance from the national News Service of the Methodist Church:

“You may have been concerned about news of a court decision on whether Bideford town council could have prayers as a part of its formal meetings. Contrary to some reports, this does not appear to be a significant ruling. The judge ruled only that councils have no powers to hold prayers as a formal part of council business to which all councilors are summoned, a situation which may change under the new Localism Act. He also ruled that the former councillor who complained about the prayers had not been discriminated against, nor had he had his freedom of thought, conscience or religion violated. Please continue to pray for the business of local and national government.”

The faith & society think-tank Ekklesia also offers some wise words.

Jazz Church this Sunday

There’s some great music lined up for the second of our new monthly Jazz Church evening services. We’ll have swinging hymns for everyone to join in, some outstanding instrumental numbers, plus a couple of uplifting jazz anthems guaranteed to make you smile.

Jazz Church is at 6.30pm this Sunday, 12 February, and everyone is welcome. Oh, and about those jazz anthems: singers of all abilities are also welcome to come an hour before the service to practise and take part in our open jazz choir!
